I had been wanting to try a shampoo bar for a really long time before I actually bought one. Last September, when I was in Virginia visiting my sister, I went into the local LUSH Beauty store, which is known for its cruelty free, bold and handmade vegan cosmetics, bath and beauty products. My niece and I went in store to browse and see what we could see. And smell. Lots of smells. And lots of people. And lots of people smelling. There seemed to be one clerk per shopper and they were all very welcoming and helpful. We didn’t end up buying anything that evening but I was able to price the R&B conditioner that I use on occasion. It was something I picked up through our Buy Nothing Group and absolutely love it.
So I went home and continued to use whatever shampoo and conditioner I had started at the time and kept the thought of a package-free/plastic-free/all natural shampoo bar in my head. You know what they say about thoughts becoming reality? I found out about a local family business that makes- you guessed it- shampoo bars meeting all my criteria! It’s a family business called The Yellow Bird and the bar I bought was the Grapefruit, Rosemary & Lavender. I bought two, one for the upstairs bath and one for the downstairs. I was surprised when my package arrives just a few days later and also included an activated charcoal sample bar. It was so cute!
All their soaps are handmade in small batches with premium natural and organic ingredients. Using a traditional cold process soap making method ensures the best chemical free cleaning experience for skin. I’ve been using the shampoo bar about 6 weeks now and the charcoal about 1 week.
Here’s my review:
Zero Waste Packaging: Cardboard cover, paper sleeve.
Scent: Clean, pretty, fabulous for both
Efficacy: I’m very happy with results from the shampoo bar. My hair is seriously strong and doesn’t get as greasy after two days of not washing. I don’t even use conditioner except if I am wearing my hair down. Let’s be real – I don’t always comb my hair either…messy buns go a long way! The soap bar makes me happy! Corny sounding I know- but it really does. Look at it in my soap dish- no gross soap slush! It leaves my skin with a very clean feeling. Have only used this on my face so far.
Value: Good. At $10 per shampoo bar, it might sounds like a lot for shampoo (at least that kind we normally buy) but a bar lasts a really long time and you don’t need to use it daily. The fact someone close by took the time to make this bar , design the package and ship this to me, makes $10 seem very reasonable.
Anything else? They offer nine different 1 oz sample bars, free shipping on orders over $19.50 and a $5 coupon with your first order 🙂
